The Impact of the Game 'Football Superstars' on society

Football Superstars is the world’s first virtual football world; currently on trial the game aims to be released in the latter months of 2008 and will be available to sign up on the internet. The game that will be broadcast worldwide is the first of its kind where players will only control one player during a football match, rather than the regular power over of a full team. The game contains voiceover technology, which allows all players to communicate with one another, players can also walk around the virtual city and indulge in the finer things in life, in a virtual world that takes 25 minutes to walk around in real time.

As this is the first game of its type, it will defiantly have a huge impact on society. The game in general will attract the male gender in the younger age categories moving into the early 20’s which will have an impact socially on their society. The game has no official ending because you can constantly improve your player and boost up points to move higher up the ladder, this may be dangerous for some users of the game because they don’t know when to stop. The addiction to carry on playing leads to a lack of social interaction with people, which is vitally important at a young age. Football Superstars allows players to interact with each other via a headset during a game situation. Some may argue that the users have the option of interaction with other users on the game which contributes to their daily interaction; however this form of interaction seems false when compared to having a conversation face to face with another human being. Also due to the situation of the game, the conversation between players will most likely contain a lack of intellectual content. The lack of social interaction may lead a user to be short of confidence when talking to someone on a one on one level in later life, which would be the most drastic effect the game, could have on an individual.

It is becoming regular practice that these young children would sooner sit at home on a computer game rather than go out and play and interact with friends. As the games are becoming more true to life the users will be engaged. This is precisely why the game Football Superstars is dangerous, the game creates a new life for the users, many children have the ambition of becoming a professional football player and this game makes the dream become a reality. The virtual city inside the game takes 25 minutes to walk around which gives an indication of potentially how much time children could spend on the game. Many believe that football games are harmless when compared to violent games that may brainwash children however, all games are designed to have an addictive effect and I believe that the game Football Superstars will achieve this which can only have bad effects on the society in which people live.
